Jaap Stam sends best wishes to Edwin van der Sar after brain haemorrhage

Jaap Stam has sent his best wishes to Edwin van der Sar, who is recovering in hospital after a brain haemorrhage.

The former Manchester United goalkeeper was admitted to hospital last week whilst on holiday with his family in Croatia.

Van der Sar’s wife, Annemarie, later released a briefing to media that he was not in ‘life-threatening danger’ and was in a stable condition. Now we must wait to see how the recovery progress goes but everyone wants to see him make a quick return to full health.

Van der Sar made a total of 266 appearances for United, winning four Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2008. He was replaced by David de Gea who left United this summer after 12 years.

The news about Van der Sar led to a number of tribute messages from some of his former clubs and teammates. Now Stam has added his voice to those well-wishes with a message to his compatriot.

“We all send our love to Edwin. We know him very well and it’s always shocking to hear that things like this are happening now,” Stam told ManUtd.com. “Edwin has always been very sporty, you know, and he always exercises a lot.

“So you don’t expect this to happen to a former player and a former teammate. He’s been living a stressful life before, at Ajax of course, in the job that he was in [chief executive].

“Then, probably six or seven weeks after leaving the club and being on holiday, this is happening to him and his family. Of course, it is a huge impact for them and for everybody that knows him, as well.

“So we wish him all the love and we wish all the best to him and his family. Hopefully, he is going to recover well and he’s going to be staying safe.”

Stam and Van der Sar played 60 games together for the Netherlands, however, the defender left United four years before the latter joined from Fulham.

Just like Stam, we send our best wishes to Van der Sar.
