Manchester United had to rely on a penalty shootout to qualify for the fourth round of the Carabao Cup against League One side Rochdale.
Our slow start to the season continued on Wednesday night as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men were held to a 1-1 draw in normal time at Old Trafford.
Daniel James scored the winning penalty to spare Solskjaer and his players further embarrassment.
Paul Pogba returned to the United midfield after 25 days out with an ankle issue and youngster Axel Tuanzebe was named captain for the night.
United’s only goalscorer in normal time, Mason Greenwood, came back into the starting line-up after recovering from illness. He struck one with a beautiful left-footed strike.
To Rochdale’s credit, they caused United problems all evening. They equalised through 16-year-old Luke Matheson on the 76th minute to take the game to penalties.
United went through after scoring all five penalties with James responsible for the winner.
Chelsea await United at Stamford Bridge in the fourth round.
