Manchester United consider swoop for 26 y/o Eredivisie defender

Feyenoord defender David Hancko is on Manchester United’s radar this summer.

The 26-year-old was part of the Slovakia team which nearly knocked out England in the last-16 of Euro 2024, but his focus will now be on his future amid links to several big clubs.

According to The Athletic, United are looking for a left-sided defender who could provide cover for Lisandro Martinez as well as Luke Shaw given their injury issues last season.

United will consider Hancko as a possible alternative to Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, but the report states that he may prove too expensive for someone likely to be a squad player.

Everton are expected to reject an improved bid for Branthwaite worth £45m plus £5m in add-ons. That offer falls far below the asking price.

In the meantime, United are making progress on a deal to sign Netherlands defender Matthijs de Ligt, who is expected to replace Raphael Varane.

Hancko was tipped to follow Arne Slot to Liverpool this summer but the versatile defender, who plays at centre-back and left-back, says a move to Anfield is unlikely despite having talks with his former manager.

“I think that in three years he [Slot] will be among the best coaches in the world,” Hancko previously told Dutch outlet Voetbal International. “I can see that happening, because I know what he did with us and now he has the biggest platform to show that.

“I have a lot of confidence in him and his staff, and I don’t say that because I hope to go with him to Liverpool, because that is unlikely.

“I have spoken to him a few times since the end of the season, but I don’t think they are looking for a player in my position, so I don’t think a transfer to Liverpool will happen.

“But I wish him the best of luck, he really is a fantastic coach.”
