Fabrizio Romano has weighed in on Manchester United’s reported interest in RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner.
The Red Devils’ shortlisting of the former Chelsea forward came as a surprising revelation to the Old Trafford faithful, who likely could’ve named countless strikers they’d like to sign before the likes of Werner came to mind.
Prior to his underwhelming spell at Stamford Bridge, the German international was one of the hottest prospects in world football; in 212 appearances for the Bundesliga outfit, Werner netted 113 goals and 47 assists in all competitions. At Chelsea, he registered 23 goals and 21 assists in 89 matches, though he did leave London with Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup titles to his name before returning to Leipzig.
In a bid to relieve the goalscoring burden on young Rasmus Hojlund, it’s believed that United will pursue a forward in the January transfer window. Anthony Martial’s future is uncertain and as it stands, he’ll leave the club as a free agent at the end of the season, so Erik ten Hag needs another name he can rely on amidst a lacklustre start to the term in M16.
Romano on United’s interest in Werner
Speaking in his exclusive Daily Briefing with CaughtOffside, Romano explained that United had made contact with Leipzig over Werner, however, any potential approach will depend on the board reshuffle following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s imminent buy-in.
“The situation is less clear with Timo Werner, despite my understanding being that United have asked to be kept informed on his situation as it’s possible he could leave RB Leipzig this January after becoming unhappy at the club,” the transfer expert revealed.
“There’s still nothing advanced at this stage, and again the new director at Old Trafford will be key to seeing how this deal progresses, or if they pursue it at all.”
