Newcastle consider January swoop for €60m defender on Manchester United’s radar

Manchester United’s chase for a new centre-back has thrown up a number of names, including Sporting Lisbon star Goncalo Inacio.

The Portuguese defender has been linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent months, however, not without suggestions that he could move to another Premier League club.

According to Mais Futebol, Newcastle have been ‘studying’ the possibility of signing Inacio in the January transfer window.

The report suggests the Magpies have been following the centre-back since last season and they are now considering ‘moving forward’ to pursue a deal.

It is understood that Sporting Lisbon are not willing to negotiate a sale unless his €60m buyout clause is paid.

Meanwhile, Correio da Manha (H/t Sport Witness) claim United, Liverpool and Man City are all interested in Inacio as well.

United not only need a replacement for Raphael Varane, but it would make a lot of sense to sign a left-sided centre-back to provide backup for Lisandro Martinez.

Of course, Inacio isn’t the only defender linked with a move to United, so it’s not like he’s our only option and Newcastle are gaining ground to secure his signature.

The Reds are being linked with moves for Jean-Clair Todibo and Jarrad Branthwaite.
