Manchester United assistant manager linked with Ajax job

Manchester United assistant manager Mitchell van der Gaag is being considered by Ajax to become their new manager.

That is according to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf and the move would see Van der Gaag return to Ajax, where he was previously a member of Erik ten Hag’s staff.

The coach followed Ten Hag to Manchester United last summer.

However, Ajax are currently in turmoil after the worst start to a season for decades and they are expected to part ways with Maurice Steijn.

Steijn believes his side are struggling because they lack the know-how of players such as United’s Donny van de Beek, who most fans would be happy to see the back of because he hasn’t been able to reach the required standards at Old Trafford.

“I look at the teenagers who can offer more than the players on the bench,” Steijn told reporters, as quoted by The Metro.

“(Some of our senior players) are not yet able to bring it in training and during substitute appearances. No, I haven’t written them off. But I make different choices based on what I see in training and what I think the team needs.

“Of course, this team would benefit incredibly from experienced players, such as Matthijs de Ligt, Frenkie de Jong, Donny van de Beek. Daley Blind and Dusan Tadic also excelled.

“We don’t have those guys, and that is a disadvantage for the team.”

Ten Hag brought Van der Gaag with him because it was someone he could trust in Manchester. It would be a blow to lose him now, but I’m sure Ten Hag has worked with an array of talented coaches down the years that would join him at Old Trafford.

We’ve also got Steve McClaren working along with Ten Hag and Van der Gaag.
