Match preview: Manchester United must end Aston Villa’s unbeaten run to strengthen grip on top four

Manchester United take on Aston Villa this Sunday, April 30 at Old Trafford in a 2pm kick-off.

Whilst the Red Devils have not tasted defeat in four Premier League games, there is an element of ‘bouncing back’ needed in their next one given how last night’s ended.

United squandered an early 2-0 lead to eventually draw 2-2 away to Tottenham Hotspur, ending the night with two points dropped rather than one gained, and a chance to boost their top four pursuit wasted.

They now take on an in-form and rampant Villa side, who have been unexpected highflyers ever since Unai Emery took the reins after Steven Gerrard’s sacking.

Villa currently boast a 10-game unbeaten streak, having overseen eight wins and two draws in that time.

Villa are soaring under Emery

Emery’s first game in the dugout was against United and resulted in a 3-1 victory for the Midlands side, so the reverse fixture will certainly be playing on Erik ten Hag’s mind this weekend.

After being considered relegation candidates several months ago, Villa now find themselves with their sights firmly set on securing European football for next season, as they sit sixth-placed in the table.

Six points separate them and United, though the Villans have played two more matches.

The Reds are undoubtedly favourites to finish in the Champions League spots, but they’re going to have to work for it. Their run-in is not the easiest and with several first-team players sidelined, Ten Hag will have to navigate the remainder of the campaign without his first-choice line-up.
