Match review: Two points dropped rather than one gained for Manchester United

A chance to cement their grip on the Premier League’s top four went astray for Manchester United last night.

An away trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium provided the Red Devils a chance to boost their pursuit of securing Champions League qualification, but failure to kill off the game resulted in the night turning awry.

United saw out a dominant first half in North London against a managerless Spurs side. They were able to find the back of the net twice through Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford and could’ve definitely entered cruise control if they were able to make it a three-goal advantage.

However, the tone of the match drastically switched following the interval, with Spurs coming out after half time on the front foot. The Reds were forced to navigate the constant flurries of attacks until Tottenham’s breakthrough was eventually fired home by Pedro Porro. Game on.

Seconds after the goal, Bruno Fernandes displayed a clever bit of footwork to find himself one-on-one with Fraser Forster before striking his attempt against the crossbar. The perfect chance to react to an opponent’s goal unfortunately squandered.

Tottenham again continued to press the scrambling Reds and in the closing stages of the clash were able to bring the tie level. Harry Kane found Son Heung-min with an exceptional pass, leaving the South Korean an easy tap-in.

Next up for United

Erik ten Hag will undoubtedly see the result as two points dropped rather than one gained, and now the squad must prepare for the forthcoming pivotal fixtures; Sunday holds a home outing with a rampant Aston Villa side, who are unbeaten in 10 games, and then an away trip to the Amex to take on the in-form Brighton and Hove Albion.

Top four is still in United’s hands, but they’ll have to work for it.
