Manchester United open talks with Crystal Palace goalkeeper as backup for De Gea

Manchester United are targeting a goalkeeper to provide backup for David de Gea between the sticks at Old Trafford.

According to BBC Sport, the Red Devils have opened talks with Crystal Palace for 29-year-old Jack Butland, who is out of contract in the summer.

Butland has made just 10 league appearances since joining the Eagles in 2020. The Englishman has been outlined as a replacement for Martin Dubravka, whose season-long loan spell was cut short. He has now returned to Newcastle United.

There had been speculation throughout the first half of the season regarding De Gea’s future at United, as he is in the final months of his contract in Manchester.

De Gea set to stay at United

However, it has been confirmed today that the Spaniard is holding positive talks with the club and is set to agree a new deal on a reduced salary to ensure he stays at United.

Whilst his form has fluctuated in recent years, this season he looks back to his best and has been world-class under Erik ten Hag. He is currently second in the race for the Premier League Golden Glove having picked up eight clean sheets so far and has produced countless crucial saves to keep his side in games.
