David de Gea hopes to see out career at Manchester United – positive contract talks ongoing

David de Gea has confirmed his contract extension talks with Manchester United are positive and that he hopes to see out his career at the club.

The Spaniard has been one constant in an ever-changing United side since 2011. De Gea is the last remaining first team player to have worked under Sir Alex Ferguson and was part of the team that last won the Premier League in the 2012/2013 campaign.

Whilst his form may have fluctuated in recent years, he is back to being world-class this season; he is second in the Premier League clean sheet rankings with eight and has made countless crucial saves to win matches for the Reds.

Speculation has circulated over the past few months on whether or not the 32-year-old would remain a United player beyond the summer, as his current contract is approaching its final months.

However, according to The Telegraph, De Gea is prepared to sign a new deal on a reduced salary to ensure he stays between the sticks at Old Trafford. He currently earns £375,000-a-week and is the Red Devils’ highest earner, though the fee could soon be reduced significantly.

The goalkeeper is hopeful of seeing out his career at United. He told MEN: “I’m very relaxed [about the situation]. Just focus on training, perform as best as I can. But, for sure, it’s going to end in a good way.

I hope so [staying at the club for the rest of his career]. I was saying this is my club, I’ve been here many, many years and it’s a huge honour to be here and I’m so happy here.”
