Louis Saha urges Manchester United to avoid Cody Gakpo transfer

Louis Saha thinks Manchester United should avoid trying to sign Netherlands star Cody Gakpo, despite reports heavily linking the attacker with a move to Old Trafford.

We are going to put this under the ‘unpopular opinion’ category because most Manchester United fans seem to like the idea of signing the PSV Eindhoven forward in January.

There is no denying that his heroics at the World Cup were impressive – scoring three goals and adapting to a centre-forward role under Louis van Gaal. This could be the type of versatility Ten Hag opts for when he signs a new forward – in a bid to make United’s attack more fluid.

Saha, though, is not convinced by Gakpo and has urged Ten Hag to forget about a potential transfer.

Speaking to Compare.bet, as quoted by The Metro, Saha said: “He’s a very good player, and has had a really good tournament.

“His performance on the biggest stage prove that he can perform in the Premier League, he’s so quick, and scores goals for his club and national team.

“I’d like to see him play at this level for another one or two years.

“I’m not convinced he should be signed straight away and he’ll be the right fit.

“We’ve seen quality players like [Jadon] Sancho struggle to transition to the Premier League.

“We know Gakpo is a quality player but would a move to United be right at the moment for his development?”

Saha isn’t talking rubbish and backs up his point by referring to a player who is currently struggling at United. Unfortunately for Sancho, he could be about to lose his place in the team if Alejandro Garnacho continues his impressive form when the domestic action returns.

I like Gakpo but he’s not your out-and-out centre-forward which might not be something Ten Hag is overly worried about. A front three of Marcus Rashford, Cody Gakpo and Antony would be a sight to see.

Does Saha suggest we should wait for another club to snap him up – so that in another year or two he will cost an extra £40m? I would like to see United return to being proactive in the transfer market.

Gakpo has no problem scoring goals which makes him one of the most exciting prospects out there at the moment.
