Jonathan David says he is unaware of rumours linking him with a move to Manchester United, but the Canada international revealed he is a big fan of the Premier League.
It is no secret that Manchester United need to sign a goalscorer. Although Cristiano Ronaldo has had his contracted terminated, we are lacking in the goals department when he was in the squad this season, so Erik ten Hag finds himself in desperate need of at least one addition in January.
One player who has been linked with a move to United is Lille forward Jonathan David. The Canadian’s admiration of the Premier League is clear to see from his recent interview and it could benefit many suitors in England.
When quizzed on links to United, David said (via Goal): “I am aware of nothing. When I am at the World Cup I am just focused on trying to enjoy the World Cup and enjoying the moment. What happens after I do not know, we will have to see. The Premier League is the best league in the world and I think every player would want to play there some day.”
It remains to be seen if United will get involved in a race to secure David’s signature.
After three defeats in Group F, Canada are out of the World Cup, so David will return to Lille who sit seventh in Ligue 1. He has scored 9 goals in 15 league matches this season – as well as registering a further 3 assists.
David has bags of pace and his willingness to run in behind could benefit Ten Hag’s side. That said, I think we should be aiming for a player with a higher ceiling than David. I think there’s better out there.
Jonathan David rumours not adding up
In a recent column for Caught Offside, transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano stressed that there are no talks ongoing between United and Jonathan David’s entourage at the moment.
“Jonathan David is a player I really rate, and I’ve said he could be a good option for Manchester United. He’s now being linked with the club, but how reliable is the story?
“It’s normal for top players to be linked with Man Utd, but at the moment there are no negotiations ongoing for David. He’s well known by United scouts of course but there are no talks ongoing at the moment.
“I’m sure he will continue to attract interest from many top clubs.”
