Manchester United Supporters Trust release statement on potential club takeover

Manchester United Supporters Trust have released a statement on the potential of a club takeover following the news that the Glazer family, who became majority shareholders in 2005, were in discussions with Apollo Global over the sale of a minority stake.

The development is coming under increasing scrutiny by Manchester United supporters and MUST have now stressed that any prospective takeover must be completed with the club’s tradition and ethos in mind.

“Speculation is mounting about a potential change of ownership or new investors at Manchester United. While supporters have called for change, of course this has to be the right change.

Any prospective new owner or investor has to be committed to the culture, ethos and best traditions of the club. They have to be willing to invest to restore United to former glories, and that investment must be real new money spent on the playing side and stadium.

“Finally any new ownership structure must embed supporters, including a degree of fan share ownership, in their operating model.

“These are the criteria supporters will judge any bid on. We are open to dialogue with any bidder, and look forward to any such discussions,” MUST said in an official statement posted on Twitter.

SN’s verdict…
The Glazer family have owned a majority stake in Manchester United for the last 17 years and since then, a steep decline into mediocrity has been adopted.

As it was unequivocally put by MUST, any new ownership must not share the views and intentions of the Glazer family – the club’s best interest and preserving its traditions must be the priority.

United fans are desperate for a change but a transition into another third party with the sole intention of generating profit must be avoided at all costs.

  1. It would be great to see Utd free from the debt that has burdened the club .A new owner who is also a supporter means a lot because he will no how the fans think and I hope would allow a spokesperson on the board
