Ajax turn down €80m bid for Antony as Manchester United turn attention elsewhere

As we stressed on Stretty News throughout the summer, Ajax have been pricing Brazilian winger Antony out of a move to Manchester United.

Still, I find it ridiculous that they would turn down an offer worth €80 million when most people we’ve spoken to in the football industry think his valuation should be far less than that. It tells me United are desperate and have reached panic mode.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, the Eredivisie champions want to keep their star man on the wing, therefore, have decided to rebuff United’s latest efforts to sign Antony.

United made the new and improved offer on Wednesday after Erik ten Hag identified his former player as one of his primary transfer targets. It’s clear he wants more in the attacking department.

Ornstein reports that PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo is now seen as a likely alternative option to the Brazil international, writing: “A deal for PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo is seen as more likely of the two.”

The Dutch attacker is a good finisher and plays on the left wing, so it means Marcus Rashford needs to raise his game dramatically if he’s to keep his place in the team.

Meanwhile, a deal for Casemiro is progressing.
