Man Utd submit bid over €80m for star striker but player wants Liverpool transfer – report

Reports linking Manchester United with a move for Benfica striker Darwin Nunez have been widespread but recently, it has been suggested that Liverpool hold the upper hand in the race to sign the Uruguay international.

Nunez is regarded as one of Europe’s best young strikers and last month, it was claimed that United had registered serious interest in signing him this summer.

Edinson Cavani will leave the club upon the expiry of his contract later this month and Anthony Martial is also expected to depart. There is little clarity on Mason Greenwood’s situation and Cristiano Ronaldo has yet to confirm whether he will be staying or not.

It’s safe to say that United are a forward or two short to challenge on all fronts next season and Ten Hag had reportedly set his sights on the Benfica man.

The Dutchman was dealt a heavy blow earlier this week, however, after it was revealed that Liverpool had opened talks with the Portuguese club over a transfer.

There are now encouraging reports from a United perspective, with claims from Portugal suggesting that the Old Trafford club are refusing to accept defeat.

That’s according to Record, via Sport Witness, who say that United, in the ‘recent hours’, have submitted a bid larger than the €80m proposed by Liverpool.

Despite United’s efforts to hijack the deal, it’s also claimed that Nunez is wholeheartedly set on a move to Liverpool and a last-minute switch is deemed unlikely.

Nunez scored 26 goals in just 24 starts for Benfica in the league this season, with his eventual transfer expected to break the €100m barrier.
