Man Utd make informal approach to Sporting for Portugal’s top scorer

Manchester United have reported made an informal approach to Sporting Lisbon over their high-rated winger Pedro Goncalves.

Goncalves, 22, joined Sporting from FC Famalicao last summer in a deal worth £5.85m, according to Transfermarkt. This season he has featured 18 times and has been directly involved in 15 goals across all competitions.

That’s a seriously impress record and after seeing how quickly Bruno Fernandes settled in at United, I wouldn’t be surprised if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer asked his scouting network to do extra work on Goncalves between now and the end of the season.

According to a report in the print edition of Record (via Sport Witness), Solskjaer has highlighted Goncalves as a United target.

It’s worth nothing that Sport Witness ran another report from Record that suggests Liverpool had made an informal approach to Sporting.

The report claims that United’s hierarchy recently made an informal approach for the 22-year-old which was rejected.

Sporting’s new star is believed to have a £53m release clause and is contracted at the Portuguese club until 2025.

I discuss the need for a right winger again on the Strettycast (available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts etc) this week and I hope Amad Diallo can make some sort of impression this year after eventually joining from Atalanta this month.

Goncalves operates on the right flank and has helped Sporting jump to the top of the Liga NOS table. And with 12 domestic goals to his name he’s on top of Portugal’s goalscoring charts with FC Porto’s Sergio Oliviera ranked second (7 goals).

I can’t say I have him player but he definitely seems like a player we should be keeping an eye out for!
