Man Utd forward could be in line for long-awaited start against West Brom

Edinson Cavani could be in line to make his first Manchester United start against West Brom as the Premier League returns this weekend.

Cavani, 33, is yet to be selected in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s starting XI but made a goal-scoring impact from the bench in United’s last outing against Everton at Goodison Park.

The Uruguayan veteran finished cooly after some unselfish play from Bruno Fernandes as the Reds capitalised on the counter to alleviate pressure on their manager.

Cavani has had to settle for three cameo appearances in the Premier League and two in the Champions League but may be given the nod by Solskjaer against struggling West Brom amid mounting injury worries.

According to the Mirror, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood are all doubts for Saturday’s clash which presents Cavani with the ideal opportunity.

Rashford withdrew from England duty after suffering a shoulder injury against Everton but the seriousness of his setback is not yet known.

The Mirror note that Martial missed a France training session on Monday with a back complaint and subsequently missed their 4-2 Nations League victory over Sweden.

Greenwood, meanwhile, stayed with United over the international break, and we hope the teenager is fit to start after he was spotted training at Carrington.

Cavani is unlikely to start if Rashford and Martial are deemed 100% fit, but he is a very useful replacement.

Slaven Bilic’s West Brom side are without a win in eight league games this season and Cavani should be able to profit from plenty of chances if given his first start at Old Trafford.

Saturday’s fixture against West Brom kicks off at 8pm UK time and will be shown live on BT Sport 1 HD.
