High-profile German journalist Christian Falk has refused to rule out a shock transfer for Thiago Alcantara to Manchester United this summer.

Thiago has 12 months left on his contract at Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich and has been widely tipped for a move to the Premier League.

Bayern could choose to sell the 29-year-old this summer to avoid losing him on a free transfer, and a proposed exit is bound to cause interest from a host of top European clubs.

Thiago has long been considered one of the elite midfielders across Europe and would be a classy option for plenty of sides in England.

However, it would surely be a huge surprise to see him arrive at Old Trafford given United’s urgency to strengthen in other areas and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s recruitment strategy of acquiring young, developing talent.

Despite this, Spanish publication SPORT ran a bizarre story suggesting that Thiago could be about to leave Bayern for United, rather than a switch to Liverpool which has been more highly touted.

United were heavily linked with a move for Thiago in the forlorn David Moyes era but there has been no suggestion whatsoever they may move in for him this summer.

But respected journalist Falk, who is Head of Football at SPORTBild, decided against pouring cold water on rumours over a transfer to United.

Falk is becoming famous for replying ‘True’ or ‘False’ on transfer stories on twitter but cheekily replied ‘I wouldn’t say not true’ to a United fan intrigued by the speculation.

We would still be very surprised if Thiago ended up at United this summer, but the fact that well connected Falk decided against ruling out the club’s interest in the player is certainly worth taking note of.
