Man Utd defender latest to join injury list as Tuanzebe, Matic return to training

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has provided an injury update in Friday’s press conference ahead of Sunday’s game away to Sheffield United.

The United manager confirmed Scott McTominay is ruled out with the ankle injury picked up in the victory over Brighton, and also revealed that Marcos Rojo is the latest to be added to the injury list.

Rojo got a muscle injury in training or he’s been struggling with it, so he’s been trying to get back, Solskjaer said, as quoted by ManUtd.com.

He’s not ready yet. He had to pull out of the internationals. He was playing with some discomfort towards the end of that run. So maybe [he will be out for] a couple of weeks.

Rojo has been impressive when called upon in the Europa League this season after it had appeared his Old Trafford career would be over in the summer.

The Argentine defender has featured nine times for the Reds this season, seizing his opportunity in the absence of Axel Tuanzebe and Eric Bailly. He has been on the winning side in each of the last four games he has appeared in.

While Rojo is known for displaying passion on the pitch and ferociousness in the tackle, it’s his controlled aggression that has been most impressive this season.

We would have expected him to start in the Europa League match against FC Astana in Kazakhstan on Thursday, as United look to secure top spot in their group.

Instead, Solskjaer may choose to select Phil Jones in central defence as he will look to rest some of his first-team stars.

In positive news, Solskjaer confirmed three squad members are back in first-team training ahead of Sunday’s game.

“We’ve lost Rojo, he’s injured. Paul is still injured, but we’ve got Axel, Luke and Nemanja back in training, so we’re looking better, getting numbers back. Maybe not match-fit – Axel, Luke and Nemanja have been out for a long time. But numbers in training, we’re stronger,” he added.
