Marcos Rojo lays into Harry Maguire over special Ole Gunnar Solskjaer treatment

Former Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo has unleashed a rather bullish rant about former ‘teammate’ Harry Maguire.

The Argentine centre-back spent seven years at United after joining in a £16m deal from Sporting Lisbon in 2014, but he never became the defender we had hoped for, but he was entertaining to watch at times.

As a United player, Rojo was rash at best, always diving into reckless tackles but was never sent off in a Red shirt.

Rojo was pushed down the pecking order when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer signed Maguire from Leicester City in 2019.

The former Argentina international only started one Premier League game in Maguire’s debut season, so it was safe to say the writing was on the wall.

Rojo has reflected on this period from his time at United rather negatively, which will come as no surprise anyone, but it is still surprising to hear a professional footballer express himself in such a colourful way.

He told TyC Sports (as per The Express): “In 2019, I was playing in the Europa League, but I was really angry with the Manchester coach [Solskjaer].

“Because he was putting Maguire [in the team] instead of me, who, thank god, finally they took him out from the starting line-up for Licha [Lisandro] Martinez.

“One day, I went to Solskjaer’s office to tell him to let me leave for the other club or put [me] in the starting line-up, but he told me that Maguire had to play yes or yes because of the money they paid for him.

“He [Maguire] was making huge mistakes already, and I told Solskjaer: ‘Son of a b****, let me play because this guy is making huge mistakes every week’.”

Rojo’s spell at United came to an end in 2021, but this would suggest that Maguire was untouchable under Solskjaer.

I guess this comes back to the debate about managers and the loyalty they have with their most expensive signings. It should’t be the case and it was one of Solskjaer’s downfalls.

  1. I wonder if the high price tag was also the reason why Ole handed Maguire the captaincy as well.

    1. Correction Hector:Ole was the manager of Utd when Maguire was signed.the article in question even confirms that fact.

  2. The most useless player I have seen on earth is maguire, very unfortunate person will continue to support man united if maguire still playing in the team ,and moreover Ten hang making grossly mistake every time he make substitute second half, Fred is a minus and valencia defender. I am tired of man united coach and player except Rushford and Bruno f, these are the 2 players in united.

    1. Your the kind of so called supporter we can do with out it’s obvious you don’t no anything about football We have totally over achieved this season One Cup already in the FA cup final and 4th in the League in Ten Hags first season and your moaning about him REALY!Your a glory hunter and the type of so called Utd fan who would have got our greatest manager sacked don’t you remember Sir Alex first few years at Utd where terrible?Until he had time to get the players he needed in and get the youth system properly working that started spitting out some of our great players. It’s Ten Hags first season and he can only work with what he’s got at moment. And we are missing our two main centre backs to injury with no real decent cover.Last season we would have been pumped.Statements like what people like you posted show you really are just glory hunters. You stick by your team through the bad and good times

      1. Glad there are some fans out there that understand football, and that we could not achieve more with the cards we were dealt with Ronaldo and Martial as our two strikers
ETH and team have done a remarkable job this year, and one or two more transfer windows, and we can remove the players that are not up to the Man U standard

  3. Man UTD would have been better off by now if the team had given same opportunities given Maguire to Marcus Rojo and Eric Bailey. They would have grown in confidence by now but Ole thought otherwise and the rest is history. They are giving underserved favours and opportunities to Maguire who has consistently failed and has disgraced them but still.
