Violent scenes in Istanbul: Fenerbahce ultras attack Manchester United fans

There were multiple cases of violence on the streets of Istanbul last night.

We heard from several Reds who have travelled to Turkey for Manchester United’s Europa League clash against Fenerbahce.

Jose Mourinho warned ahead of the match that United will face a completely different atmosphere from the Fenerbahce supporters, but I don’t think he meant on the streets while out enjoying a few pints.

One United fan in Istanbul explains to Stretty News that their five-man group were stormed by 50 Fenerbahce fans. Two were left injured by glasses and a crowbar.

“About 50 of them swarmed us,” one source said.

“One lad followed me down a street and pretended to help before hitting me a shot into the jaw.”

There is a separate report of an incident where 20 Fenerbahce fans descended upon a smaller group of Reds, throwing glasses in their direction and looking to cause further unrest.

Fenerbahce ultras threaten Manchester United fans after attack

The Fenerbahce ultras are not trying to cover up last night’s behavior. They are instead boasting about ambushing people on the streets who were trying to have a good time.

In the video above you will see several United fans get assaulted. There’s really no excuse for this sort of behaviour, but we must shine a light on it, for the sake of fan welfare moving forward.

Fenerbahce should be punished if fans of other clubs can’t feel safe visiting the city ahead of a game.

I hope we batter Fenerbahce on the pitch tonight.

Stay safe, Reds.
