John Murtough faces axe as part of Ineos’ rebuild at Manchester United

Big changes are expected at Manchester United this summer with Ineos taking control of football operations.

The future of Erik ten Hag remains unknown but has been described as a ‘marriage of convivence’ by respected reporter Laurie Whitwell.

However, it is believed that a decision on the manager will be made at the end of the season.

Ineos were quick to appoint Omar Berrada as chief executive in January, although he is not expected to start working at the club until the summer. The former Barcelona and Man City chief is currently on gardening leave.

Furthermore, Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox are set to come on board, eventually, as sporting director and technical director.

The changes have often led to the question: What does it mean for John Murtough, who has served as football director up since 2020?

The Athletic claims Murtough is ‘set to depart’ after claims he could take up a reduced role. That was until both parties accepted that a clean separation would be best. Ashworth is expected to be part of a decision on the new manager, too, once he starts work.

The report adds that although Ten Hag’s future is up in the air at the moment, the Dutchman has been involved in planning for next season.

Of course, The Telegraph deserve a degree of credit for reporting at the end of last year that Murtough had expected to be part of Ineos’ clear out.

This will be a popular decision among supporters because Murtough has never completely took hold of the role as football director. He hasn’t had too much of an influence on the club apart from scuppering talks with Jude Bellingham before he left Borussia Dortmund for Real Madrid – only to enrage Sir Alex Ferguson.

Another Glazer scrooge out the door following in Richard Arnold’s footsteps? Farewell.
