For the first time since 2005, Manchester United’s ownership now has a significant other in Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
As far as fans should be concerned, it’s not perfect because the Glazers still own a majority stake in the club. That isn’t to say you should be fooled into thinking it won’t be significantly better than with the Glazers in full control.
Petrochemicals billionaire Ratcliffe has completed the purchase of a 27.7% stake in Manchester United through his INEOS conglomerate – enabling him to take control of football operations from the owning Glazer family, as per Sky News.
United confirmed on Christmas Eve that a deal had been agreed for Ratcliffe to take a 25% stake in the club, with the Glazer family diluting their shares, and INEOS taking control of football operations.
While waiting for the deal to go through, United pulled off a surprise appointment with Omar Berrada coming from Man City as the club’s new chief executive. Now they’re in the process of bringing former Newcastle sporting director Dan Ashworth to Old Trafford.
The deal ends a dragged out saga that has engulfed United for 15 months without the full sale fans had been demanding to end the 19-year reign of the Glazers.
INEOS intend to bring the best in class to United and it certainly looks like that is coming together. Hopefully it all makes for a brighter future for our football club and Ratcliffe becomes known as the saviour.
