Manchester United make contact with Karim Benzema – reports

Contrary to what has been reported elsewhere, reports in Spain claim Manchester United have made contact about a move for Karim Benzema.

Speculation over the former Real Madrid is at fever pitch right now because he is thought to be pushing for a move away from Saudi Arabia – just six months after relocating from Madrid.

That said, Benzema has denied he wants to leave Al-Ittihad where he has scored 12 goals in 20 games.

Despite being captain of the Saudi Pro League club, Benzema reported back to winter training 17 days later than scheduled, which sparked suggestions that he could be looking to cur short his stay at Ittihad short.

Benzema has dashed suggestions that he is trying to force a move this month. He told L’Equipe, as quoted by The Mirror: “It’s completely false! The French media don’t know what to invent any more. The bigger the better.”

The 36-year-old has been mooted as a potential option for United – and other Premier League clubs – in the January transfer window, though the Reds are struggling with Financial Fair Play at the moment and the Frenchman has a hefty salary.

Reports from Spanish publication Marca suggest early discussions have been held with United, Arsenal and his former club Lyon.

Meanwhile, Ben Jacobs claims that senior sources at United are playing down links with Benzema.
