Alvaro Fernandez joins Benfica for the remainder of the season

Manchester United full-back Alvaro Fernandez has signed for Portuguese champions giants Benfica on loan until the end of the season.

The Spaniard enjoyed a promising pre-season tour with United’s senior squad before joining La Liga outfit Granada on a season-long loan, which has now been cut short. Fernandez made 13 appearances in all competitions prior to his switch to Benfica.

Fernandez will now see out 2023/24 with the Primeira Liga champions, who are currently one point behind city rivals Sporting Lisbon at the top of the table.

Benfica have Europa League football to look forward to, too, having been eliminated from the Champions League group stages. Star player, Angel Di Maria, will be known to United fans after his short spell at the club when Louis van Gaal was manager.

This will be his third stint away from United since joining the club in 2020 from Real Madrid, but it is understood this deal has a. buy option clause that could be triggered at the end of the season.

Benfica are in action again on Friday.

We would like to wish Fernandez the best at the Estadio da Luz.
