Manchester United to send 20 y/o striker to League One outfit on loan

Manchester United striker Joe Hugill could join League One side Burton Albion on loan today.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the loan move was agreed last week but an announcement was delayed as Hugill was required for first-team training amid United’s striker shortage.

This may be a suggestion that Anthony Martial is nearing a return from illness following a report from Sky Sports that he is determined to stay at the club in January and see out his contract.

Prior to arranging Hugill’s expected loan move to Burton Albion, United made sure to convince the 20-year-old to agree fresh terms with United until 2026. That deal was announced on Wednesday and now Hugill could make his debut for his new club against Derby County on Monday night.

Burton are currently 17th in the League One table and announced Martin Paterson as their new manager on Thursday.

From a United perspective, it would be great to see Hugill go on loan and get plenty of first team experience for the remainder of the season. It’s the next step of his career and Erik ten Hag will look forward to tracking his progress when he returns for pre-season in the summer.

He has been named on the bench for United four times this season but is yet to make his debut for the club. That will come with time granted he takes his opportunities and this is a good chance to show League One what he has in his locker.

Hugill joined United from Sunderland’s academy in 2020 for £300,000 and won the FA Youth Cup in 2022.

We would like to wish Hugill well on his loan stint at Burton. More when it’s confirmed.
