Benfica plan to secure signing of Manchester United left-back in the next few hours

Benfica are planning to secure the signing of Manchester United left-back Alvaro Fernandez in the next few hours, according to reports in Portugal.

The Spanish defender is currently enjoying a season-long loan at Granada from United, but the club have the option of breaking the agreement in January, which would allow them sell him to another club in a bid to make a profit on the player.

Benfica’s interest in Fernandez is not news as it has been speculated for weeks that they were interested in a permanent deal this month. It’s now a matter of whether United feel the young Spaniard will be part of their plans in the future.

Today’s edition of Record claims Benfica could close the deal for the 20-year-old in the ‘next few hours’, and it has been hours since it has first published.

There were suggestions at one point that Fernandez would be one day good enough to make it at as a regular in the United first team. That didn’t appear to be the case this summer when he was overlooked and sent on loan by Ten Hag at a time the first team was in desperate need of left-backs.

Fernandez’s contract expires in June as things stand and there has been no talk of him getting a new deal. United should be trying to negotiate a sell-on and buy-back clause at the very least.
