Graeme Souness questions Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s decision to bring Ineos chief to Manchester United

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been warned against bringing Sir Dave Brailsford to Manchester United.

Manchester United currently sit seventh in the Premier League, out of Europe and the Carabao Cup, but the club has been boosted by the long-awaited conclusion of a drawn out ownership saga.

Unfortunately there’s no getting rid of the Glazers right now, though Ratcliffe and Ineos have got their foot in the door after acquiring a 25% share in the club. It’s better than nothing.

Ratcliffe is now set to appoint Sir Dave Brailsford to United’s football board, acting as his lead representative as he assesses what needs to change at Old Trafford… and there is a lot!

However, former Liverpool hatchet-man Graeme Souness believes hiring Brailsford at United would be a mistake.

Souness has highlighted Brailsford’s struggles at Ligue 1 side OGC Nice, despite turning things around this season, which shows you how little homework he did before writing his latest column for the Daily Mail.

“A big fix is needed at Manchester United if Sir Jim Ratcliffe is to start getting the club back where they should be in 2024. I don’t imagine for one minute he will be investing £1.3billion and then sitting back to watch more of the same.

“Delegation will be key. There has been a lot of talk about Sir Dave Brailsford. If Brailsford really had the biggest say at Nice, who have struggled under Ineos ownership, I’d suggest Sir Jim would be better off looking for the best football man out there.

“Brailsford’s background is not in football, so Sir Jim has got to find a football man he can lean on heavily – really, really heavily – and then hope he’s hired the right one. It’s not going to be a quick fix.”
