Jarrod Bowen reflects on ‘comfortable’ final 10 minutes vs Manchester United

West Ham goalscorer Jarrod Bowen suggested that Manchester United’s poor finishing cost us on Saturday.

The Reds suffered their 13th defeat of the season at the London Stadium and none of us are in a position to complain about the result.

Erik ten Hag’s side did not create enough chances and those that were created were wasted. It became an even bigger problem in the second half as West Ham became clinical with two goals from Bowen and Mohammed Kudus.

United had the best chance in the first half, when Alejandro Garnacho was played through one-on-one with the West Ham goalkeeper. In the end, his effort was easily saved by Alphonse Areola.

It was West Ham favourite Bowen who opened the scoring after a sublime pass from Lucas Paqueta. The killer blow came six minutes later when Kudus made it 2-0 following a mistake from Kobbie Mainoo.

Following West Ham’s memorable win over United, Bowen explained that the first goal would be crucial in the game and that chances went both ways throughout the game. He also explained that the Hammers were ‘comfortable’ moving into the closing stages of the game, which I think tells you more about the reaction of our players to going behind in the second half.

As per usual, they give up and decide they don’t fancy it.

“It was never going to be a walk in the park,” the winger told BBC Match of the Day, as per the Manchester Evening News. “Manchester United are a really top side in this league.

“We knew it would be a difficult game, first half, we caused them a few problems, but they had a few chances as well,” Bowen added. “The game just needed a first goal whether it was us or them, thankfully for us, we got it. Held on for a really good clean sheet and a really good 2-0 victory.

“Second half, we kept at it, kept plugging away, and got the goal. Then, more importantly, we got the second goal quite soon after and then made it more comfortable for us going into the last 10 minutes.”
