Newcastle consider shock move for former Manchester United No. 1 amid Nick Pope injury

Newcastle United are considering their options as they await the results of scans on Nick Pope’s shoulder injury, which could open the door for free agent David de Gea to return to the Premier League.

Pope was substituted late on in Newcastle’s 3-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday and it sounds like the goalkeeper faces months in the treatment room with a dislocated shoulder problem he previously suffered at Burnley.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has Martin Dubravka to call upon, as well as former Liverpool stopper Loris Karius, but the Daily Mail claims they are considering a possible move for David de Gea.

The Spaniard left Old Trafford during the summer as a free agent. His signing has obvious appeal given his Premier League experience, immediate availability and the fact he would not require a transfer fee.

Erik ten Hag replaced De Gea with Andre Onana in the summer, but the new addition has had a topsy-turvey start to life at the club with mixed performances.

The report states: “Mail Sport understands De Gea is one potential option Newcastle have looked at. He left Manchester United in the summer after 12 years at Old Trafford but has yet to join a new club.”

De Gea has also been linked with a move to MLS side Inter Miami.
