While we don’t believe for one second that Erik ten Hag’s job is in doubt, we’ve got to look at the reports that suggest Manchester United are eyeing up Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi.
The story comes from TEAMtalk and they believe Juventus, as well as United, have identified De Zerbi as a candidate for the future.
De Zerbi is another example of Brighton’s impressive recruitment team after leading the Seagulls to European competition last season.
The report states: “Manchester United and Juventus are both looking at the Seagulls’ boss as a potential replacement should they need to fill the position for next season. There is uncertainty at both clubs and there is a possibility that the respective hierarchies could make substantial changes.”
Interestingly, it is believed that Brighton have already begun the process of shortlisting names to replace De Zerbi as their manager, but a lot of organised football clubs make plans like this in case the manager suddenly departs.
United need to back Erik ten Hag
We will soon see change at Old Trafford when Sir Jim Ratcliffe completes his acquisition of a 25% stake in United. The recruitment team will be reshuffled, but most match-going fans will want to see Ten Hag get the backing he needs to be a success.
That seems an impossible ask – for any manager – under Glazer ownership.
It has been a difficult season to date for the Dutchman, although we always knew there would be hiccups along the way.
TEAMtalk claim that if United are out of the Champions League spots by the end of the season and have not picked up any silverware, there is a ‘high chance’ that Ratcliffe will move to sack Ten Hag as manager.
In turn, that could see United approach De Zerbi.
