Roy Keane was full of praise for Kobbie Mainoo after the young midfielder’s first Premier League start as Manchester United beat Everton 3-0 at Goodison Park.
Mainoo returned to the team on Sunday after being ruled out with an ankle injury since pre-season. His influence on the game was huge and his impact helped secure our fifth win in six league games.
While United’s front three scored the goals, Mainoo was the standout player in the heart of midfield after getting the nod over Sofyan Amrabat.
Mainoo had 57 touches of the ball with a passing accuracy of 83%. He blocked one key shot on goal and made a vital clearance off the line.
“Unbelievable, I don’t want to get too carried away but I’m sure we will,” Keane told Sky Sports, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News. “He looked like he always had time on the ball and decision-making – when you go long, when you go short. Off the ball as well, what an all-round performance.
“I know the club thinks highly of him. They’ll look to the game today, coming to Everton, for the manager to put him in, he obviously must trust him.
“Listen, good luck to the kid. He was outstanding. It’s a great start for him. Let’s hope he stays injury-free and gets a run of games for Man United because he looked like a Man United type of player today. Nice and brave, a lot of courage, loved watching him.”
United take on Galatasaray in the Champions League this week and it remains to be seen if Mainoo will get a consecutive start in the team.
