Manchester United planning to axe John Murtough as football director

John Murtough’s days as football director at Manchester United are numbered.

Just like vice executive Richard Arnold, Murtough does not have a future at Old Trafford with Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s investment expected to be ratified by the Premier League soon. That will mean more key personnel changes for the 20-time champions of England.

According to the Manchester Evening News, United are planning to replace Murtough as football director when Ineos Group arrive at the club.

A source told the Manchester based newspaper that Murtough is “definitely going” amid a preference of a new figurehead for the football department.

Murtough has been at United for 10 years and was named inaugural football director in March 2021.

Several big names in the football world have been linked with roles at United under Ineos. Arnold is expected to be replaced by former PSG and Juventus chief Jean-Claude Blanc and there’s been constant speculation about Paul Mitchell coming to the club after returning to his home in Manchester.

Furthermore, Ineos sporting director Sir Dave Brailsford is set to have a significant role at United once Ratcliffe’s 25% stake investment is approved by the Premier League.
