Argentina manager explains Alejandro Garnacho snub

Manchester United starlet Alejandro Garnacho was left out of the Argentina squad for this month’s World Cup qualifiers.

It sounds like Erik ten Hag’s reluctance to start Garnacho at the start of the season has been a deciding factor in the attacker missing out on a call-up to the Argentina squad this month. In turn, Garnacho hasn’t been able to show the form that would warrant a call-up to the World Cup champions.

The 19-year-old enjoyed a terrific breakthrough campaign at United last term but has struggled for regular starts this time around. Of course, he’s still young and Erik ten Hag has a squad to manage, so it’s important to remember that he is still finding his feet in the senior game.

Argentina take on Uruguay and Brazil in this month’s qualifiers, but Lionel Scaloni has explained his reasons for leaving out Garnacho from the squad.

“Ale’s non-selection is due to a form issue,” Scaloni said in a press conference, as quoted by the Express. “We don’t like to bring players in and constantly leave them out or leave them out of the squad. Everyone wants to be there and it’s great, but the human side players and you have to make decisions.

“It would have been easy to bring him, but in the last few call-ups he didn’t get minutes and there are times when you have to make decisions. He’s a guy who’s on our radar and he’s going to continue to be there and he has a huge future.”

Personally, I think it’s a positive that Garnacho has not gone on international duty this month. United have a busy festive period coming up and Ten Hag will need him at his best. It gives him extra time on the training ground to work with his teammates and coaches.

The international stage can wait.
