Manchester United had a comfortable lead over Copenhagen until Marcus Rashford was sent off.
Rashford was sent for an early shower with the scoreline 2-0 in United’s favour, but that lead faded as the Danish champions scored two quick-fire goals to make it 2-2 before the break.
United came out stronger in the second half and took the lead again through Bruno Fernandes. However, it didn’t last long enough, and Copenhagen scored another two goals to make it 4-3.
Opinions were split on whether Rashford deserved the red card. TNT co-commentator Robbie Savage was adamant that it was a red card, while Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves argued he was unlucky to be dismissed.
I, for one, thought it was clear that Rashford was trying to shield the ball before accidentally landing his standing foot on Elias Jelert’s leg – just above his ankle.
VAR intervened and the referee was forced to check the pitch-side monitor.
Speaking to Bold.dk, Jelert gave his verdict on the red card, saying: “I can feel that it is high, but no free kick is awarded to begin with.
“I don’t think he’s after me. He tries to shield the ball and then his foot ends up quite high. There I could feel that it landed well. So yes, it was enough for a red card.”
Jelert added that despite playing 90 minutes against United, he could still feel the knock he took in the first half: “It hurts a little more now that it has become cold than when you around with adrenaline.”
