Former Manchester United duo disagree with Marcus Rashford red card

According to former Manchester United duo Owen Hargreaves and Paul Scholes, Marcus Rashford should not have been sent off against FC Copenhagen.

The Reds were 2-0 up when the England international was sent off for an accidental foul on Elias Jelert.

Rashford tried to shield the ball from the opponent, but without looking at Jelert he misjudged how he planted his foot when he studs landed above the Copenhagen star’s ankle.

VAR intervention led to the referee checking the monitor before Rashford was sent for an early shower.

We didn’t agree with the decision because Rashford shows zero intention to hurt his opponent. Furthermore, Jelert played on.

Hargreaves acknowledges that Rashford was a “little bit clumsy”, but he calls for officials to stop looking at these incidents in slow motion. Scholes agreed – as a former player who understands the game – as you can see from the TNT Sports coverage below.

In hindsight, I would argue that a yellow card would be been a fair outcome. The red card was very harsh and it changed the game.

United conceded two goals shortly after Rashford’s dismissal and the scoreline stood at 2-2 at half-time.

Unfortunately for United, Erik ten Hag’s side took the lead again in the second half but conceded another two goals.

It finished 4-3 to Copenhagen.
