Man City have acted quickly to suspend two young fans from attending all games for their connection with chants recorded in relation to Sir Bobby Charlton’s passing.
One of the most iconic players the English game has ever produced, Sir Bobby Charlton survived the 1958 Munich air disaster and went on to win the World Cup, European Cup and Ballon d’Or award.
The sad news of Charlton’s death was announced last weekend before videos emerged on social media of City fans singing vile chants about the Manchester United legend.
On Friday, ahead of the Manchester derby, City confirmed two people have been suspended with their details passed onto the police.
A statement from City read (via Manchester Evening News): “Manchester City can confirm that two minors have been identified in connection with the vile chanting heard at the Etihad Stadium during half-time of last weekend’s fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion.
“The individuals in question have subsequently been suspended from attending all home or away fixtures and their details have been shared with Greater Manchester Police who are investigating the matter.
“Following the conclusion of Greater Manchester Police’s ongoing investigation, the individuals will be subject to the Club’s official sanctions and bans process.”
City manager Pep Guardiola spoke about Charlton’s impact on the game in the wake of his passing last week. The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager was keen to pay his own tribute.
“When he retired, I was born so I saw the highlights. I am sorry to the Manchester United family, to his family and England,” Guardiola said, as per Sky Sports.
“These types of players and personalities represent English football like no-one else can do it.
“Condolences from us for his family especially.
“Next week when we go there (to Old Trafford), we will be present to make a tribute.
“I love this country for many things but one of the things is how they take care of the legends.
“They are part of the club and they travel.”
Hopefully, the City fans at Old Trafford on Sunday can behave themselves.
