Tributes have poured in for Sir Bobby Charlton following the sad news of his passing at the age of 86.
World Cup winner Sir Bobby Charlton will be remembered as one of the greatest footballers in history as well as a man who epitomised Manchester United.
Charlton was a key member of England’s 1966 World Cup-winning side before going on to win the Ballon d’Or award that same year. Furthermore, he lifted the European Cup with United two years later, following the 10th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster which he witnessed as a young player.
Manchester United led the tributes to one of their greatest ever figures – not just as a player but as a man – following his death this afternoon.
“Manchester United are in mourning following the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest and most beloved players in the history of our club,” read a statement from ManUtd.com.
“Sir Bobby was a hero to millions, not just in Manchester, or the United Kingdom, but wherever football is played around the world.
“He was admired as much for his sportsmanship and integrity as he was for his outstanding qualities as a footballer; Sir Bobby will always be remembered as a giant of the game.”

Bobby Charlton saw close friends die at Munich. He helped lead Manchester United's recovery to become English, then European champions. For decades the club's record goal and appearance holder, he was a World Cup winner and European player of the year too. What a life. RIP.
