Supporters and managers of both clubs paid their respects to Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton when Middlesbrough hosted Birmingham City in the Championship.
Fans at the Riverside – both home and away sections – provided a round of applause after Sir Bobby Charlton’s passing was announced in the stadium.
It was announced this evening by Manchester United that the World Cup and European Cup winner died at the age of 86.
Meanwhile, at the Riverside, Wayne Rooney was managing his first game as Birmingham City manager – facing former Manchester United teammate Michael Carrick. Both managers joined in the applause as an image of Charlton appeared on the big screens in the stadium.

Rooney surpassed Charlton’s goal record for United and England during the latter stages of his carer. Together with Carrick he showed his class.
Tributes have flooded in since the news was announced and we can expect more over the weekend.
Charlton scored 249 goals for the Reds and made an incredible 758 appearances. He will go down as one of the club’s greatest.
