23-year-old Manchester United academy graduate completes move to Leverkusen

Matej Kovar has left Manchester United in a permanent move to Bayer Leverkusen, the clubs confirmed today.

The 23-year-old leaves Manchester after five-and-a-half years in the club’s academy setup, though he did spend last season on loan with Czech Republic outfit Sparta Prague, where he earned a league winner’s medal.

He signs a four-year deal with the Bundesliga side in a transfer believed to be worth £7.7 million, as per The Mirror.

Kovar did not make his official debut in the Red Devils’ first-team but impressed fans with his pre-season appearances this summer between the sticks, when he proved that he was ready for senior action.

Game time key for Kovar

He was unlikely to be granted game time under Erik ten Hag due to the options he has at his disposal, with Andre Onana, Tom Heaton and Dean Henderson all ranking higher in the pecking order than Kovar, so a move elsewhere was certainly the best option for all parties.

Leverkusen will be well aware of the crucial role he played in United’s under-21s and will now look to continue his development in Germany.
