Erik Ten Hag explains decision to start Alejandro Garnacho vs. Wolves

Erik Ten Hag has explained his decision to start Alejandro Garnacho against Wolves on Monday night.

Preparing to kick off their 2023-24 season with an important Premier League tie against Gary O’Neil’s Wolves, the Red Devils come into tonight’s match at Old Trafford as the game’s overwhelming favourites.

And naming his starting 11, Ten Hag has not only decided to award goalkeeper Andre Onana and midfielder Mason Mount with their competitive club debuts, but the Dutchman has also selected Garnacho for what is the Argentine’s sixth senior league start.

Explaining the thinking behind his latest team selection, the United boss admitted his talented number 49’s attributes and form left him with no choice but to award him with his first start of the season.

“Last season Garnacho improved a lot,” Ten Hag told Sky Sports, as quoted by BBC Sport.

“He has huge potential. He is a threat one-on-one. He has the end product. He can do it from the bench but I think he deserves the chance to do it from the first XI.”

Tonight’s game, which is scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m. (UK time), will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.
