Wolverhampton Wanderers may be without manager Julen Lopetegui for their opening fixture of the campaign against Manchester United.

The Red Devils kick off their 2023/24 season against the Midlands outfit at Old Trafford next Monday, August 14.

Despite fluctuating form in pre-season, United look ready for the new term ahead and already have three new additions to bolster the squad as they bid to compete on all fronts – including their return to the Champions League.

Latest recruit Rasmus Hojlund, however, won’t be featuring in the game as he faces a spell on the sidelines until late August. Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay also may no longer be part of the team by then given United’s ongoing talks with West Ham over the duo.

Concerns at the Molineux

For Wolves, things are looking awry. They lost club captain Ruben Neves to the Saudi Pro League in the early stages of the transfer window and have made just two signings –  Matt Doherty returned to the Molineux from Atletico Madrid and Tom King arrived on a free transfer.

This has consequently led to Lopetegui mulling over his future in the dugout, with reports suggesting he could walk due to the lack of backing from the board, as per the Daily Mail.

The Spanish boss joined Wolves last season when they sat rock bottom of the table and led them to a 13th-placed finish. It is reported that Gary O’Neil would be in line to take Lopetegui’s place after he succeeded in keeping Bournemouth in the top flight.
