20-year-old Manchester United midfielder garnering interest from EFL clubs

Charlie Savage is garnering interest ahead of the 2023/2024 campaign.

According to The Sun, the 20-year-old is being targeted by Championship duo Cardiff City and Rotherham United, as well as League One sides Reading and Portsmouth.

Those interested are considering acquiring the Carrington prospect on either a loan or permanent transfer, with Manchester United’s stance currently unconfirmed on his potential exit.

Last season, Savage, son of former Wales international Robbie, gained crucial experience with Forest Green Rovers, where he netted his first-ever senior goal. The side ultimately oversaw relegation into League Two, though.

Savage featured for the Red Devils in their opening pre-season friendly against Leeds United last week and even donned the captain’s armband throughout the second half of the match, but was not granted a place in Erik ten Hag’s 31-man squad for their tour of the United States.

Savage breakthrough unlikely

Given United’s strength in midfield, including latest recruit Mason Mount, Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, it’s unlikely that Savage will breakthrough into the first-team in the foreseeable future. Ten Hag has, however, eyed 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo as one Academy star with the potential to earn a place in the matchday squad next term, with the club now ruling out a loan spell.
