Manchester United pocket £1m as Tahith Chong completes Luton Town transfer

Manchester United will earn £1 million for former youth team player Tahith Chong, following confirmation of his £4 million switch from Birmingham City to Luton Town.

After securing promotion to the Premier League, Luton Town have embarked on a busy summer to prepare for life in the top flight. Rob Edwards will be aiming to build a team capable of avoiding relegation.

In order to achieve Premier League status for another year, Edwards has completed the signing of Chong from Birmingham City.

The 23-year-old, who previously enjoyed a loan spell at Birmingham, only lasted one year at St. Andrew’s as a permanent player.

However, it may come as a surprise to some of our readers that United are set to benefit financially from Chong’s latest move.

Chong only made a handful of senior appearances for the Reds, but a 25% sell-on clause means United will pocket £1m of the £4m transfer fee Luton have paid for him. Birmingham recieve the rest.

The young winger joins the likes of Rotherham’s Chiedozie Ogbene and Barnsley’s Mads Andersen.

We look forward to seeing Chong back in the Premier League. Luton’s first game of the season will see them travel to the south coast to face Brighton.

Edwards has been a fan of Chong since his United days

Edwards has admitted he has been a long-time admirer of Chong after the Hatters snapped up their new sign for a club record fee.

The manager told the club’s official website: “Tahith is someone that I, and the football club, have known for a very long time.

“I first crossed paths with him when I was at Wolves a few years ago and he was in Man United Under-23s.

“Looking at him in a lot more detail at Birmingham this year, he’s been able to play inside as a midfield player as well.

“Not only is he good technically, but athletically he’s shown another side to his game this year in the Championship, that his out of possession work was diligent, hard-working and reliable.”

  1. As a Birmingham fan I’m a bit shocked we sold him so cheaply (probably not as shocked as Utd fans were when you sold him to us). The fee could rise to £10m so United should get 25% of further profits if they avoid relegation (unlikely) or he fulfills certain milestones plus a sell on. A bit unfortunate as I was looking forward to seeing him and Laird on the right. I hear he wanted the move to play Premier league football
I think he should have stayed as exciting times ahead for us with new owners. KRO.
