Jack Butland breaks silence on Rangers transfer

Jack Butland insists it was an easy decision to snub a permanent offer from boyhood club Manchester United to join Rangers.

I mean, of course it would when you’re unlikely to get any game time at Old Trafford next season, regardless of who we have left in the goalkeeper department.

Butland was part of a trio of players to join United on loan in January (Glazernomics). It deal materialised after Martin Dubravka returned to his parent club Newcastle. It would be clownish to say either of them made an impact throughout the season. They were just last ditch options at best.

However, Butland seems to have made the correct move because he is expected to be the No.1 choice at Ibrox.

The former United keeper says the chance of regular football made it a simple decision to make for his future.

“It wasn’t difficult,” he told Football Scotland. “Joining Manchester United was a great opportunity to join a club I supported as a kid and learn from the best and things like that but you quickly get to a point where you realise just how much you miss playing yourself and how much you miss the winning feeling.

“Rangers had always been there for a few years but it never quite got to a point where I had a decision to make and this summer it got to that point. It wasn’t a difficult decision to make, it’s an incredible club to join with the history and being successful is what you want as a player.

“That’s this club’s goal every year without fail. Be successful and win. That’s an exciting place to be as a player, and hopefully we can do that.”

De Gea’s contract expired on Friday and Dean Henderson looks set to join Nottingham Forest.

Butland was also asked about De Gea’s uncertain future.

That said, United are being heavily linked with a move for Andre Onana.
