Erik ten Hag mulls over 21-year-old striker who scored 27 goals last season

Erik ten Hag remains keen on Benfica’s Goncalo Ramos, with Manchester United adamant about acquiring a top No.9 this summer.

The 21-year-old has enjoyed a prolific breakthrough season in which he made his mark on both his club and national team.

He made his World Cup debut last year when replacing former Red Cristiano Ronaldo in the starting line-up against Switzerland and netted a hat-trick in Portugal’s dominant 6-1 victory.

Across the 2022/2023 campaign, Ramos scored 27 goals and contributed 12 assists in all competitions for Benfica – scintillating numbers for a young forward.

According to the Daily Mail, Ten Hag is “an admirer” of Ramos. Their report adds: “It was thought that Benfica would not accept less than the £85m Liverpool paid for Darwin Nunez last summer, but Ramos may be available for a lower price.”

Meanwhile, United’s top goalscorer was Marcus Rashford with 30 goals in total. Bruno Fernandes finished second in the rankings with 14 goals, and centre-forward Anthony Martial ranked third with just nine to his name all season.

United continue striker search

It’s no secret that a striker is a necessity this summer, hence all the links so early in the window. Harry Kane is undoubtedly a perfect match but unless Tottenham Hotspur lower their high valuation, he will not be making a switch to Old Trafford in the coming weeks. Consequently, Ten Hag is having to consider alternatives.
