Match report: United seal third-placed league finish with 2-1 final day victory over Fulham

Manchester United have finished third place in the 2022/2023 Premier League campaign.

Erik ten Hag’s side took told to Old Trafford for the final matchday of the season in a bid to keep the momentum high ahead of the FA Cup final – and that they did.

Despite conceding first through a Kenny Tete header, the Red Devils fought back to see out a 2-1 victory.

After Fulham took the lead, they were quickly on the hunt for a second to cement their dominance in the match. A threatening counter-attack forced Casemiro to foul Tom Cairney and give away a spot-kick in the 26th minute, however, David de Gea spared his teammate’s blushes with a sensational penalty save to keep United in the tie.

Flurries of United attacks eventually led to Jadon Sancho equalising with a smart finish to find the back of the net in the closing stages of the first half.

Following the interval, an exceptional through-ball from Fred found Bruno Fernandes in the 55th minute, with the midfielder displaying some clever footwork to skip past Bernd Leno and seal all three points.

Next up for United

Attention now turns to the first-ever Manchester derby FA Cup final on June 3rd. Ten Hag is hoping that Antony will be available to feature after he sustained an injury midweek against Chelsea.

With Champions League football secured, one trophy in the bag and the chance to add another on Saturday, it’s safe to say that Ten Hag’s first season in the dugout has been a resounding success. Time to build on it and continue the Dutchman’s Red resurgence after the summer.
