Manchester United monitor two goalkeepers to fight for No 1 role

David de Gea is in the spotlight after his recent howler against West Ham on Sunday night. It has led to speculation about Manchester United monitoring two goalkeeper targets.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag decided to publicly back his goalkeeper, which shouldn’t come as a surprise because he’s going to need him for at least five more matches.

The Reds have four matches left in the league before taking on Man City in the FA Cup final. Ten Hag’s side need at least 3 wins from those league games to secure a place in the Premier League top four.

According to ESPN, United remain committed to keeping De Gea next season but he has been given no assurances he will continue as the club’s No 1.

The Spaniard is in the middle of talks about extending his contract at Old Trafford, with his current deal set to expire in the summer.

While United could trigger a 12-month extension, it is understood they want to agree new terms with the keeper earning a smaller salary.

The report also stresses that De Gea has been given no assurances that he will be first choice keeper next season. In turn, the recruitment team has drawn up a list of potential targets, including David Raya at Brentford and Diogo Costa at Porto.

With Harry Kane being the primary target this summer, a lot will depend on how much Ten Hag has to spend in the upcoming transfer market. He may have to start De Gea next season if the bulk of his budget is used on other areas of the squad.

De Gea may have the most clean sheets in the Premier League this season, but he has a lot to prove between now and the end of the season. Some will argue he is already out of time.

Meanwhile, talkSPORT claim Ten Hag wants to bring in competition for De Gea – and they name fellow Spaniard, Raya, as a potential option.
