Manchester United’s defence has undoubtedly improved under Erik ten Hag this season, but to what degree?

It goes without saying there have still been signs of weakness and the ‘old’ United, who would lose their heads after conceding an early goal or heading into a derby match. I can think of at least three matches off the top of my head this season where the team’s performance and the end result have been simply unforgivable.

However, all of those matches came away from home, and it’s looking like Old Trafford is seriously turning into a fortress that is feared again. Last night rounded off another clean sheet and crucial win that moved the Reds back into the top four.

United’s defensive record at home

According to a statistic shared by Amazon Prime Video Sport, the Red Devils have conceded the fewest goals at home throughout the 2022/2023 league campaign so far (eight). Consequently, David de Gea is well in the running to win this season’s Golden Glove award; he is joint-second with Aaron Ramsdale on 12 clean sheets and just one behind Nick Pope on 13.

The club have also lost just one league game on home turf all season. Five out of United’s 10 remaining league matches will be at the Theatre of Dreams; Everton, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Wolves and Fulham.
