BBC pundit criticises Marcus Rashford after Newcastle defeat

Marcus Rashford’s performance against Newcastle on Sunday has been the subject of criticism.

The Manchester United star had the fewest touches of any outfield player to complete 90 minutes, with only 29, as he failed to have any real impact on the game.

United will be hoping to get back on track immediately after their 2-0 defeat to Newcastle, but I don’t think we should solely blame any one player for the result – especially not Rashford.

The Reds were abysmal all over the pitch.

From David de Gea trying to play out from the back, our full-backs struggling to deal with Newcastle’s wide players and a non-existent midfielder. There was a lot more to our defeat than Rashford’s quiet display.

When it came to player ratings after the match, Stretty News gave Rashford a 4, whereas ESPN went even lower with 3.

Elsewhere, BBC Sport pundit Chris Waffle was critical, saying: “Rashford has been nowhere to be seen, his performance today has been very poor.”

Eddie Howe knew about Rashford’s threat from the Carabao Cup final when he scored against Newcastle, so this shows how well they did this time around to limit him.

However, I don’t think we should be laying into Rashford for one game when he’s been our star attacker this season with 27 goals (and counting). That’s 17 more goals than any other United player.

We must also remember that he missed the recent international break due to a knock. There’s a chance he wasn’t 100% match fit on Sunday.

Hopefully Rashford is back to his best on Wednesday night when United host Brentford.
